Leading with adaptive leadership program

ENABLING LEADERS TO NAVIGATE COMPLEXITY, UNCERTAINTY, AND CHANGE ‍

Program overview

The Leading with Adaptive Leadership Program is designed to strengthen the capability of leaders to effectively navigate complexity, ambiguity, and organisational change. In increasingly dynamic environments, leaders are required to move beyond technical problem-solving and develop the ability to lead through uncertainty, competing priorities, and evolving challenges.

Grounded in Adaptive Leadership principles, the program supports leaders to distinguish between technical and adaptive challenges and understand the different leadership responses required for each. Participants develop the capability to “get on the balcony,” stepping back from day-to-day activity to observe patterns, dynamics, and systemic challenges from a broader perspective.

BUILDING LEADERS WHO CAN NAVIGATE COMPLEXITY WITH CLARITY AND CONFIDENCE

The program explores the practical realities of leading through disequilibrium, uncertainty, resistance, and competing stakeholder needs. Participants strengthen their ability to influence change, manage tension constructively, and maintain focus and clarity during periods of complexity and transition.

The learning experience is highly practical and immediately applicable to workplace environments. Leaders engage with real organisational challenges throughout the program, strengthening their capability to adapt leadership approaches, mobilise others, and lead effectively within changing and complex systems.

PROGRAM delivery

The Leading with Adaptive Leadership Program is delivered using the Australian Leadership Academy’s blended, experiential learning approach, combining self-paced prework, high-impact facilitated workshops, applied application, and reflective learning. This structured approach ensures participants arrive prepared, maximise in-session learning, and actively apply leadership capability within their own organisational context throughout the learning journey. Each stage is intentionally designed to progressively build capability while reinforcing practical workplace application and sustained leadership impact.

DEVELOPING LEADERS WHO CAN ADAPT, INFLUENCE, AND LEAD THROUGH CHANGE

Program structure

Note: The program structure above is a draft delivery option. The Australian Leadership Academy can design a bespoke
Leading with Adaptive Leadership Program tailored to meet the specific needs of your organisation.

  • Participants begin their program with a curated set of prework activities designed to introduce Adaptive Leadership concepts and encourage early reflection on current organisational challenges. This includes short readings, video content, and guided questions focused on complexity, change, competing priorities, and leadership responses within dynamic environments.

  • The program formally commences with a live, facilitator-led virtual session. This interactive introduction establishes the learning environment, outlines program expectations, and introduces the foundations of Adaptive Leadership. Participants begin exploring the difference between technical and adaptive challenges and the role leaders play in mobilising people through change and uncertainty.

  • Participants complete targeted prework designed to deepen understanding of adaptive challenges within their own leadership context. This includes reflective exercises, workplace observation activities, and preparation of real organisational challenges participants will bring into the workshop for discussion and application.

  • A highly interactive, face-to-face learning experience focused on understanding the foundations of Adaptive Leadership and navigating complexity within organisational systems. Participants explore technical versus adaptive challenges, systems thinking, stakeholder dynamics, and the concept of “getting on the balcony” to gain broader leadership perspective. Through facilitated discussion, practical activities, peer learning, and workplace application exercises, participants strengthen their capability in diagnosing challenges, managing competing priorities, and responding effectively during periods of uncertainty and change.

  • Participants complete reflective and application-focused activities linked to the implementation of Workshop 1 learning within their workplace context. The prework encourages leaders to reflect on adaptive challenges currently impacting their teams, leadership responses, and opportunities to apply adaptive leadership principles more intentionally.

  • The second workshop builds on foundational learning and focuses on strengthening the leadership behaviours and strategies required to lead adaptively over time. Participants deepen their capability in managing disequilibrium, influencing change, navigating resistance, and mobilising individuals and teams through complexity and transition. The workshop includes practical frameworks, facilitated discussion and applied leadership activities designed to support sustainable behavioural change and long-term leadership effectiveness within dynamic organisational environments.

PROGRAM IMPACT

The Leading with Adaptive Leadership Program strengthens leadership capability to effectively navigate complexity, uncertainty, and organisational change. Participants develop greater confidence in responding to adaptive challenges while strengthening their ability to lead with clarity, perspective, and intentionality.

The program supports leaders to move beyond reactive problem-solving approaches and develop more strategic, systems-focused leadership capability. Participants strengthen their ability to influence change, manage competing priorities, and support teams through ambiguity and transition.

At an organisational level, the program contributes to stronger leadership adaptability, improved decision-making, increased organisational alignment, and greater capability to respond effectively to complex challenges. Leaders are better equipped to create resilient, agile, and forward-focused workplace cultures.

LEADING THROUGH COMPLEXITY REQUIRES CLARITY, ADAPTABILITY, AND STRATEGIC PERSPECTIVE
