Leading with healthy conflict

ENABLING LEADERS TO STRENGTHEN TEAM PERFORMANCE THROUGH HEALTHY CONFLICT ‍

Program overview

The Leading with Healthy Conflict Program is designed to strengthen the capability of leaders to transform conflict into a productive and valuable part of team performance. In many workplaces, conflict is often avoided, suppressed, or handled inconsistently, limiting collaboration, trust, and effective decision-making. This program equips leaders with the skills and confidence required to engage in healthy, respectful, and outcome-focused conflict conversations.

Grounded in practical leadership application, the program introduces participants to the Thomas-Kilmann Conflict Mode Instrument and explores how different conflict styles influence workplace interactions, communication, and team dynamics. Leaders develop greater awareness of their own conflict tendencies and strengthen their ability to respond more intentionally across a range of workplace situations.

DEVELOPING LEADERSHIP CAPABILITY TO LEAD HEALTHY AND CONSTRUCTIVE CONFLICT

The program focuses on creating psychologically safe environments where differing perspectives, challenge, and respectful disagreement can contribute positively to team effectiveness. Participants strengthen their capability to navigate difficult conversations, manage tension constructively, and facilitate dialogue that supports clarity, accountability, and stronger working relationships.

The learning experience is practical, reflective, and directly connected to real workplace challenges. Through facilitated discussion, practical exercises, and applied leadership activities, participants develop practical language, frameworks, and strategies that support more confident and effective conflict leadership.

PROGRAM delivery

The Leading with Healthy Conflict Program is delivered using the Australian Leadership Academy’s blended, experiential learning approach, combining self-paced prework, high-impact facilitated workshops, applied application, and reflective learning. This structured approach ensures participants arrive prepared, maximise in-session learning, and actively apply leadership capability within their own organisational context throughout the learning journey. Each stage is intentionally designed to progressively build capability while reinforcing practical workplace application and sustained leadership impact.

STRENGTHENING RELATIONSHIPS THROUGH HEALTHY CONFLICT THAT BUILDS TRUST AND CLARITY

Program structure

Note: The program structure above is a draft delivery option. The Australian Leadership Academy can design a bespoke
Leading with Healthy Conflict Program tailored to meet the specific needs of your organisation.

  • Participants begin their program with a curated set of prework activities designed to introduce key concepts related to healthy conflict, communication, and workplace dynamics. This includes short readings, video content, reflective questions, and self-assessment activities focused on current approaches to conflict and communication within leadership environments.

  • The program formally commences with a live, facilitator-led virtual session. This interactive introduction establishes the learning environment, outlines program expectations, and introduces the foundations of healthy conflict and its role in high-performing teams. Participants begin exploring conflict behaviours, communication dynamics, and the importance of psychological safety within team environments.

  • Participants complete targeted prework designed to deepen awareness of personal conflict styles and workplace communication patterns. This includes reflective exercises, workplace observation activities, and preparation of real workplace conflict scenarios participants will bring into the workshop for discussion and application.

  • A highly interactive, face-to-face learning experience focused on understanding the foundations of healthy conflict and its role in team performance and leadership effectiveness. Participants explore the Thomas-Kilmann conflict model, psychological safety, communication dynamics, and practical strategies for leading constructive conflict conversations. Through facilitated discussion, practical activities, peer learning, and workplace application exercises, participants strengthen their capability to navigate disagreement respectfully, encourage open dialogue, and respond more effectively to conflict within teams and organisations.

  • Participants complete reflective and application-focused activities linked to the implementation of Workshop 1 learning within their workplace context. The prework encourages leaders to reflect on workplace conversations, conflict situations, communication challenges, and opportunities to apply healthy conflict principles more intentionally within their teams.

  • The second workshop builds on foundational learning and focuses on strengthening the leadership behaviours and communication strategies required to lead healthy conflict consistently over time. Participants deepen their capability in facilitating difficult conversations, managing tension constructively, supporting accountability, and maintaining psychologically safe team environments. The workshop includes practical frameworks, facilitated discussion, and applied leadership activities designed to support sustainable behavioural change and stronger team communication outcomes.

PROGRAM IMPACT

The Leading Change Program strengthens leadership capability to effectively guide individuals and teams through transition, uncertainty, and organisational change. Participants develop greater confidence in leading change initiatives while strengthening their ability to communicate clearly, respond empathetically, and maintain alignment during periods of disruption.

The program supports leaders to move beyond reactive approaches to change and develop more intentional, people-focused leadership capability. Participants strengthen their ability to manage resistance constructively, support team resilience, and create environments where people feel informed, supported, and engaged throughout the change process.

At an organisational level, the program contributes to stronger change leadership capability, improved team engagement, increased adaptability, and more sustainable organisational outcomes. Leaders are better equipped to create workplace cultures that can respond effectively to change while maintaining trust, collaboration, and performance.
