ENABLING LEADERS TO BUILD TRUST, VOICE, AND SAFETY FOR HIGH-PERFORMING TEAMS

Program overview

The Leading with Psychological Safety Program is designed to strengthen the capability of leaders to create environments where people feel safe to speak up, contribute ideas, ask questions, and raise concerns without fear of judgement or negative consequence. The program builds the practical leadership capability required to foster trust, openness, and high-performing team cultures.

The program explores the foundations of psychological safety and its critical role in team performance, learning, innovation, and engagement. Participants develop a deeper understanding of how leadership behaviours, communication styles, and team dynamics directly influence whether people feel safe to contribute fully in the workplace.

BUILDING TEAMS
WHERE PEOPLE
FEEL SAFE
TO SPEAK UP
AND CONTRIBUTE

Through practical learning experiences, participants examine how to intentionally build psychological safety within teams. This includes strengthening trust, encouraging healthy dialogue, and creating conditions where diverse perspectives are welcomed and valued. Leaders develop the awareness and capability to shift team culture from compliance to contribution.

The learning experience is highly applied and grounded in real workplace challenges. Participants explore how to respond to silence, resistance, and interpersonal dynamics in ways that strengthen engagement and inclusion. Leaders leave with practical strategies to build safer, more open, and higher-performing teams.

PROGRAM delivery

The Leading with Psychological Safety Program is delivered using the Australian Leadership Academy’s blended, experiential learning approach, combining self-paced prework, high-impact facilitated workshops, applied application, and reflective learning. This structured approach ensures participants arrive prepared, maximise in-session learning, and actively apply leadership capability within their own organisational context throughout the learning journey. Each stage is intentionally designed to progressively build capability while reinforcing practical workplace application and sustained leadership impact.

BUILDING LEADERSHIP CAPABILITY GROUNDED IN TRUST, OPENNESS, AND CONNECTION

Program structure

  • The program begins with an interactive online introduction designed to establish a foundational understanding of psychological safety and its impact on leadership, team culture, engagement, and performance. Participants are introduced to the core principles of psychological safety, program expectations, and the broader learning journey.

  • Participants complete a curated series of prework activities designed to build awareness of current team culture, communication dynamics, and leadership impact. Prework includes selected readings, short video content, reflection exercises, and practical observation activities linked to workplace experiences.

  • A highly interactive and practical learning experience focused on understanding the foundations of psychological safety and the leadership behaviours that influence team culture. Participants explore trust, communication, inclusion, team dynamics, and the impact of leadership behaviour on participation and engagement.

  • Participants complete reflective and application-focused activities linked to the implementation of Workshop 1 learning within their workplace context. Participants consider current leadership challenges, team responses, and opportunities to further strengthen trust, collaboration, and open communication.

  • Workshop 2 builds on foundational learning and focuses on embedding psychologically safe leadership practices into day-to-day team leadership. Participants strengthen capability in leading with high-performance conversations, responding constructively to feedback, encouraging healthy challenge, and supporting accountability within psychologically safe environments.

Note: The program structure above is a draft delivery option. The Australian Leadership Academy can design a bespoke Leading with Psychological Safety Program tailored to meet the specific needs of your organisation.

PROGRAM IMPACT

The Leading with Psychological Safety Program strengthens leadership capability to build trust, engagement, and openness within teams. Participants develop greater awareness of how their behaviours influence team dynamics and create environments where people feel safe to contribute and perform at their best.

The program supports leaders to shift from directive leadership approaches to more inclusive and enabling leadership practices. Participants strengthen their ability to encourage voice, respond constructively to feedback, and build stronger team relationships grounded in trust and respect.

At an organisational level, the program contributes to stronger team performance, improved collaboration, increased engagement, and enhanced innovation. Leaders are better equipped to create workplace cultures where people feel safe to speak up, learn, and contribute to shared success.
