team leader leadership program

Enabling executive leaders to strengthen their collective leadership capability to lead with clarity, alignment and impact

Program overview

The Executive Leadership Program has been designed to support senior leaders to lead with greater alignment, cohesion and strategic impact. At the executive level, leadership extends beyond individual capability to collective effectiveness, how the team thinks, decides and acts together. This program provides a structured and highly engaging environment for executive teams to step back from day-to-day operations and focus on the quality of their leadership, relationships and shared direction.

The program also explores the characteristics of high-performing executive teams, with a focus on trust, healthy conflict and commitment. Participants are supported to strengthen relationships, engage in open and constructive dialogue, and work through differences in a way that leads to better outcomes. By fostering trust and clarity, executive teams are better equipped to make aligned decisions and lead their organisations with consistency and confidence.

supporting executive leaders to navigate complexity, ambiguity and competing priorities

A core focus of the program is Adaptive Leadership, supporting executives to navigate complexity, ambiguity and competing priorities. Participants develop a broader perspective on the challenges they face, distinguishing between technical and adaptive work, and building a shared language to support more effective dialogue and decision-making. This creates the foundation for deeper alignment and more purposeful leadership across the executive team.

Leading change is another critical component of the program. Executives are supported to navigate resistance, understand the human dynamics of change, and lead others through uncertainty and loss toward future success. This is complemented by a strong focus on collective results and accountability—ensuring that the executive team not only sets direction, but also holds itself accountable for delivering outcomes. Together, these elements enable executive leaders to lead more effectively, both individually and as a cohesive team.

PROGRAM DELIVERY

The Team Leader Leadership Program is delivered using the Australian Leadership Academy’s blended, experiential learning approach, combining self-paced prework, high-impact facilitated workshops, applied application, and reflective learning. This structured approach ensures participants arrive prepared, maximise in-session learning, and actively apply leadership capability within their own organisational context throughout the learning journey. Each stage is intentionally designed to progressively build capability while reinforcing practical workplace application and sustained leadership impact.

Program Delivery

  • The program commences with a confidential executive coaching session with an Australian Leadership Academy ICF-accredited coach. This session provides a dedicated space for individual reflection, enabling participants to explore their leadership context, strengths and development areas. It also establishes clear goals and priorities, ensuring each leader is well-positioned to engage fully in the program and align their personal development with the broader executive team agenda.

  • Prior to Workshop 1, executive leaders complete a curated set of prework activities designed to introduce adaptive leadership concepts and encourage early reflection. This includes short readings, video content, and guided questions to prompt thinking about current leadership challenges and opportunities. The prework ensures participants commence with a shared baseline understanding and readiness to engage.

  • Workshop 1 is a highly interactive, face-to-face session focused on Adaptive Leadership and establishing a shared foundation for the executive team. Participants explore leadership strengths and growth edges, informed by the collective agenda, and begin developing a shared language to support more effective dialogue. The session also introduces key concepts relating to team culture, including a team culture framework and the different levels of relationships, setting the foundation for trust and alignment.

  • Following Workshop 1, participants undertake a comprehensive 360-degree leadership survey. This process provides valuable feedback and insight into individual leadership impact, supporting a deeper understanding of identity versus reputation. Leaders use these insights to inform personal development priorities and create targeted action plans aligned to both individual and team effectiveness.

  • Prework for Workshop 2 includes structured reflection, identification of individual and team challenges encountered, and preparation of more complex, real-world scenarios. This ensures the second workshop builds on practical application and reinforces learning through lived experience.

  • Prework for Workshop 3 includes structured reflection and preparation based on the evolving team agenda developed in earlier sessions. Participants identify key organisational and leadership challenges, ensuring the workshop continues to build on real-time application and emerging priorities.

  • Workshop 3 focuses on leading change and navigating complexity. Participants explore the human dynamics of change, including resistance and the experience of loss, while strengthening their capability to lead others toward future success. The session integrates practical tools and frameworks to support change leadership, with a strong emphasis on alignment, communication and consistency across the executive team.

  • Prior to Workshop 4, participants engage in a final executive coaching session, providing a dedicated space to reflect on their progress and consolidate learning to date. This session focuses on reviewing insights from the program, refining individual leadership priorities, and preparing for the final workshop. Leaders are supported to strengthen their action plans, address any remaining challenges, and consider how they will sustain and embed their leadership practices moving forward, ensuring they arrive at Workshop 4 clear, aligned and ready to focus on collective outcomes.

  • Prework for Workshop 4 includes reflection on progress, consolidation of learning, and preparation for embedding leadership practices into ongoing organisational priorities. Participants are encouraged to consider both individual and collective commitments moving forward.

  • Workshop 4 brings the program together with a focus on sustaining impact and driving collective results. Participants reflect on their leadership journey, strengthen accountability as an executive team, and align on shared priorities for the future. The session reinforces the integration of key concepts into team culture and everyday leadership practice, ensuring the program delivers lasting and meaningful outcomes.

Note: The program structure above is a draft delivery option. The Australian Leadership Academy can design bespoke programs tailored to meet the specific needs of the Executive Leadership Team.

PROGRAM IMPACT

Executive leaders who participate in the program experience a shift from operating as a group of individuals to leading as a cohesive and aligned team. They develop a shared language, stronger relationships and a clearer understanding of their collective role in setting direction and driving organisational performance.

As a result, executive teams are better equipped to engage in open and constructive dialogue, make aligned decisions and lead consistently across the organisation. Trust is strengthened, conflict becomes more productive, and accountability is clearer, enabling more effective leadership at the top.

At an organisational level, this translates into improved alignment, stronger execution and a greater capacity to navigate change. Organisations benefit from a more connected and effective executive team, capable of leading with clarity, resilience and a focus on delivering sustainable results.
